To the student of social problems who comes to America from abroad, the Negro problem appears by far the sorest spot in the moral and political texture of American culture. Many white persons live in abject poverty, but they have a definite hope that they or their children may rise to better standards of life. There seems no hope for the Negro. Even education does not help, for the economic world offers him no opportunity for higher and better remunerated positions.
